Get Out of TownArchitectural Digest tells us in their recent issue, “With spring kicking into gear, April is an excellent time to get out of town, and there are plenty of events near and far worth traveling for.

April 19 marks the grand opening of the Museum of the American Revolution, coming to Philadelphia’s Old City near the Liberty Bell. Given the current political situation, a museum reminding us of what it was like when we had to fight for our independence seems especially apt. Stay at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco nearby or spend some time getting to know up-and-coming Fishtown, where the acclaimed restaurant Wm. Mulherin’s Sons is launching four spacious hotel rooms with bespoke design details, including live-edge walnut beds and relics salvaged from the building’s past life as a pre-Prohibition whiskey blending and bottling facility.

Other get out of town destinations recommended include the Contemporary Art Fair in Glasgow, the Salone del Mobile returns to Milan, Jazz Fest returns to New Orleans, and the Brazilian beach paradise of Trancoso.

Why not Get Out of Town to Philly?

“Philadelphia is the town of brotherly love so bright and wondrous. I couldn’t ignore the light,” says Maria Sherman at Thrillist. “Family-owned businesses, those long-standing institutions, operate next to new, up-and-coming ventures. Art is a foundation of Philadelphia as much as the business and industrial careers are.”

If you’re looking for a specialized higher education in the arts, you have a number of big-name options. For example:

  • University of the Arts
  • The Art Institute of Philadelphia
  • Moore College of Art and Design
  • The Curtis Institute of Music
  • Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts
  • The Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College
